Code Week is an EU initiative started to support coding awareness among citizens of any age. It’s a week dedicated to organizing events that showcase and promote coding as a worth learning activity and a good personal knowledge asset for both present and the future.
At its second edition, this year’s Code Week happens between 11 and 17 October, all over Europe. It’s an initiative started at top European level, but designed by practitioners in the Youth Advisers group conveyed by Neelie Kroes, vice-president of European Commission and benefiting of the involvement of the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs, an initiative including major technology companies interesting in facing the close to 1 million IT jobs vacancies to affect European economies by 2020.
Within the Code Week, thousands of events will take place aiming to help spread the word about coding, to make as many people, young and mature, women and men aware and interested in coding.
On the map developed to showcase the EU CodeWeek activities you may add your own activities to add to those we already know as planned. Timisoara area is already visible there with two events to be run by CoderDojos in Timisoara and Mosnita-Noua. Plenty of Timisoara tech communities events are expected to be added, schools and universities are also preparing their entries.
Keep your eye on the map and get involved before or during the 11-17 October event period. You may volunteer to organize a friendly, open to beginners meetup on your favorite programming language or framework, you may teach kids/adults to do some coding on their own in an evenining workshop, provide basic introductions in a particular language or framework (as in the Rails Girls events) or mentor on various technologies at a Coder Dojo in your current city or your hometown in West Romania (Arad, Dumbravita, Lipova, Lugoj, Mosnita-Noua, Oradea or Timisoara). Are you too busy to have a direct, live involvement? No problem, help by spreading the word to your friends, colleagues, employers, media, your kids’ teachers or, why not, by sponsoring an event of your choice.
If you want to act in any way just get in touch with the volunteer ambassadors and ask for support. Two of the Romanian ambassadors are based in Timisoara: Monica Elena Gaza and Radu Ticiu are looking forward to help you to be part of European Code Week!
